At low tide our favourite beaches are found opposite Salcombe town. A quick ferry ride over to East Portlemouth allows you to explore the soft white beaches all along the estuary. Head all the way down to Mill Bay which is the biggest of the beaches, theres a coffee shack there during the summer months and also you can access the coastal path and take a longer walk to Gara Rock Hotel.
A short drive away, this is the biggest and best of the beaches in the South Hams. At low tide it is vast and you can search for shells, go rock pooling or play a family game of rounders without getting in anyone’s way! It’s also great for surfing and you can hire equipment there. Its on a private estate so you will have to pay for parking, but during peak season there is a great food and ice cream from the Gastro Bus, and in the evenings during the summer they also put on live entertainment.
North Sands beach is an easy level walk about 15minutes from Salcombe town along Cliff Road. A large sandy beach perfect for families, with great swimming due to the safe bay, and rockpools nearby for exploring. The beach has stunning views of the Kingsbridge Estuary, Sunny Cove on the East Portlemouth side and out to sea past Wolf Rock.
The best and freshest seafood in town, this low-key restaurant is perfectly situated overlooking the harbour and serves fresh seafood and fish straight from the boats that day. Booking is recommended.
